Boredom may not have been on your list of things you will expect from retirement but it’s an unfortunate reality for many people. If you didn’t properly plan for your retired days, you may find you are hit with the boredom that comes from a lifestyle change like retiring. This is especially true with people who retire early and think they will have all the fun in the world but really aren’t sure what to do with all the time in the world.
Boredom is one of the top complaints of anyone who has retired from a full time job and this is especially true in people who held job positions that were very busy or hectic. It’s hard to quit everything at once and just sit around in a quiet home when you’re used to in a busy work life.
They say that the first 12 months are the best. You will feel like you’re having the time of your life but nothing lasts forever and eventually there will come a time when you have done all you can think of to do and the boredom will set in.
Here are some ways to avoid retirement boredom:
• Find meaningful activities- you want to engage yourself in things that are important or meaningful to you. Find something that you enjoy or that you feel passionate about to help you stay busy.
• Rekindle something from your past- was there an activity you always loved but you never had enough time to do it while you were working? This is the perfect time to get back into it again and beat boredom while you’re doing something you want to be doing anyway.
• Try something new- part of the fun and excitement of retirement is that you now have the time and opportunity to try things you were never able to try before. Was there a hobby you wanted to do or maybe you want to learn to dance or play a musical instrument? Now is your time to try it out once and for all.
• Spend time with people you love- there is no better time than now to spend time with friends and family. Most of us don’t get enough time to do this when we are working and retirement can be the perfect opportunity to get that time you’ve always wanted together. Call or write, email or set up a party or other get-together from time to time so you can spend more time with those you care about.
• Take a trip- while you may need to budget and watch your money while retired, this is the perfect opportunity to take a trip or see someplace you’ve never been. You don’t have to worry about a work schedule to get back to so this is a great time for travel. It can be especially fun if you have someone to travel with.
Now that you have these ideas to avoid retirement boredom, you can really make the most of your retirement years. Spend your last days doing what you want and what you love!
